What to pack first when moving
What should I pack first?
Mark Twain once said, “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” What great advice for those planning a move across the country! When you’re dealing with an overwhelming task like packing up your house – where you know you have to do it, but you don’t know where to start – why not tackle the “big frog” first? You’ll be glad you did.
Haven’t used it? Pack it!
Our moving checklist is a must-read for anyone planning a long-distance move. You’ll notice when you read it that we recommend starting the planning process about 8 weeks out. At 6 weeks out, it’s a good idea to start “purging” – this is where you separate items into the things you’ll keep, donate or discard (which is very important when you move with U-Pack and pay based on the space you use). Then, about 5 weeks before your move, it’s time to start packing. This allows you to do a little at a time so it’s not so overwhelming. But, where do you start?
We recommend starting with the items you don’t use very often.
Everyone has them – we like to call them the “non-essentials.” They’re the things in drawers, closets, cabinets, etc., that you don’t use on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. The things you won’t miss if they’re packed away in a box for 5-6 weeks. You’ll recognize them as things like:
- Holiday decorations
- Out-of-season clothing
- Knick-knacks and collectible items
- Artwork and picture frames (check out the picture and mirror moving box).
- Extra towels and linens
- China or other dishes that aren’t used regularly
- Items in storage areas, garage and attic
Once you pack the non-essentials, tape up the boxes, label them with what’s in the box and where it goes, and put them aside so they’re not in the way. Five weeks of stepping over boxes is not ideal. With the “big frogs” taken care of first, you can gradually move though each room, packing things as you go – a great way to reduce your moving stress levels significantly.
What supplies do I need for packing my home?
Moving experts always recommend using the right moving boxes and supplies to pack for a successful move. By “right” we’re talking about boxes that are designed specifically for traveling in a moving truck – they’re made to provide more protection than used grocery store boxes. We also recommend wrapping your belongings in packing paper or paper padding for extra protection. The U-Pack Box Store offers a wide array of boxes and moving supplies for packing any size home. And, as a bonus, every order comes with free shipping right to your door.
