What is the largest U-Haul you can rent to move across country?
U-Haul's Largest Rental Truck
(Post updated 10/7/14)
The largest truck you can rent from U-Haul® is the 26-foot truck. If you’re moving a large home and considering one for your cross-country move, there are a few things to think about: Is it large enough to hold your belongings? Is it too big for what you’re moving? Is there a better way to move? Let’s take a look.
Exactly HOW big is the largest U-Haul?
The biggest U-Haul truck has internal dimensions of 26’5” x 7’8” x 8’3” (lwh), and can hold up to 1,611 cubic feet. According to U-Haul, it will hold a four-bedroom home. But, as you probably know, not all four-bedroom homes are created equal. So will yours fit?
Is a 26-foot U-Haul large enough?
That’s a great question—and a very important one. You don’t want to run out of room, but you also don’t want to pay for more truck than you need. To figure out if the largest U-Haul is large enough to hold your home, use the U-Pack Room-by-Room Space Estimator Tool.
If the linear footage it estimates is more than 21 linear feet, the 26-foot truck may not be big enough. If the linear footage is less than 21 linear feet, you may end up paying for a larger truck than you need.
What do you do if the 26-foot U-Haul isn’t the right size for your move?
If you have more than will fit in the largest U-Haul, there’s always the option of pulling a trailer behind—but that’s not always cheap or easy. If you don’t have enough to fill a 26-foot truck, you could choose a smaller U-Haul—but, until you start loading, it’s difficult to know for sure if everything will fit.
U-Pack® takes “space worry” out of the equation.
With U-Pack you have the ability to use the space you need—and only pay for what you use.
U-Pack offers trailers that have about 30% more loading space than U-Haul’s 26-foot truck. The trailer’s internal dimensions are 27’ x 8’ x 9’ (lwh) with a 1,944 cubic feet capacity. That makes it equivalent to the 26-foot U-Haul PLUS a 10-foot U-Haul. Even with all that room, you can use as much or as little of the trailer as you need (down to a 5 ft. minimum). And you never have to stress about whether you rented the right size truck.
Your U-Pack quote is based on the linear footage you use in the trailer. If you use less space, you pay less. If you need more, we’ll adjust the price based on the per-foot adjustment rate on your quote.
It’s easy and affordable moving.
