Tips for Moving to a New State
It's Flashback Friday! Today, we're looking back at some great tips Christina posted earlier in the year about moving to a new state. We hope they're helpful. Happy Friday!
There’s a lot to do when you move to a new state. As a new resident, you’ll want to get the to-do list done quickly so that you can enjoy all that your new state has to offer! Here are 5 helpful tips for moving to a new state:
#1 Do your taxes
Unless you’re moving to, or living in, one of the nine states that don’t require residents to pay personal income taxes (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming) you’ll need to pay taxes in two states. You’ll pay to one state as a resident, and the other as a nonresident until you become a permanent resident of your new state. Ask a tax professional about filing a nonresident state tax return.
Bonus: Did you know that if you are moving to a new state for job relocation, many of your moving expenses may be tax deductible?
#2 Register to vote
When you register to vote, you establish residency in your new state. Visit this website to learn the voter registration requirements in your new state.
#3 Find a great school
Choosing the right school for your kids when moving to a new state can be hard. To begin your search, ask your new neighbors, co-workers, or friends. Then, get all the details about their recommendations through GreatSchools.org.
#4 Cost of Living
Living expenses like food, housing, and transportation will change—either a little or a lot. Figure out what the cost of living is like in your new state by asking friends, researching online, or calling your new state’s visitor center.
#5 Connect utilities
Check with your current utility providers and see if they provide coverage in your new state. If not, check with your new city’s website to find the utility providers and call each one individually. If you’d rather have it all done for you, use services like allconnect.com or connectutilities.com. Don’t forget to have the lights and water turned on before move-in day.
