PODS® Rates Compared to U-Pack

August 3rd, 2016 - 9:25 AM

Are your PODS® rates too high?

If you’ve seen a PODS® container around town, you may have thought they were much better alternative to driving a rental truck across the country. They fit into a driveway or in front of a house and they sit close to the ground so moving things in and out is easy – what could be better? But then you request a quote and see the price … and maybe you start wondering if there are any cheaper container moving options out there.

If you’re moving long distance and your PODS® rate is higher than your budget allows, check out U-Pack®.

U-Pack rates compared to PODS®

U-Pack is a moving service similar to PODS®, where we deliver an empty container to your home, you load it, then we pick it up and drive it to your new place – but the price may be cheaper than PODS®. To find out how much your move would cost with U-Pack, click for a free moving quote.

What’s the PODS®rental cost? What about U-Pack?

While PODS® rates can be reasonable for local moving and storage, customers regularly say that U-Pack comes out on top when it comes to long-distance moving. Both companies offer free quotes, so compare away! Here’s how those quotes breakdown:

U-Pack moving containers are called ReloCubes®. They are metal, weatherproof containers that are 6’ x 7’ x 8’ (similar in size to the smallest PODS® container). You can use one or as many as you need. Your ReloCube®rate is based on the number of CubesTM you use, not how many you reserve (or you can go with the trailer option and  pay  per linear foot).

PODS® rates are also based on the number of containers you use. PODS® has three different container sizes. The 12 ft. container is used only for local moves, so if you’re moving long distance, you’re looking at the 7 ft. and the 16 ft. containers. The 7ft. container is comparable to the ReloCube and the larger 16 ft. container would be similar to 2-3 Cubes (or about 13 linear feet in a U-Pack trailer).

Compare U-Pack vs. PODS

As you compare rates, it’s also important to compare how the overall service meets your needs. Here’s what you can expect:

Service Area

When you get a PODS® rate, you’ll fill out a form online (or call). Online, they will show you whether or not they can provide door-to-door service on both ends of your move. While PODS® services many of the larger markets, you may find limited availability in smaller areas. Once you fill out the form online, you’ll be prompted to call in order to get PODS® rental rates.

If you live in an area they don’t service, don’t worry! U-Pack can service most markets with ReloCubes or moving trailers. U-Pack has more than 240 service centers to provide a network in all 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Loading Time

While PODS® allows as much time as you need to load and unload, U-Pack offers up to three business days on each end. We’ve found that this is typically the perfect amount of time to get the job done (and many apartment complexes, city parking regulations, homeowners associations, etc., will not allow parking for longer periods of time).

If you need a little extra time, you can have your ReloCube delivered on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, and load/unload over the weekend, too! And, of course, storage is available if you need it. If you have loading/unloading needs that differ from our standard service, call a moving specialist at 800-413-4799 to discuss your options.

Transit Time

Thanks to one of the most efficient transportation systems in the industry, U-Pack is able to move your belongings across the country quickly and safely – transit times average just 2-5 business days (your U-Pack quote will display the estimated transit time). In most locations, you also have the option of adding an exact delivery date. With this service, you know the day the ReloCube or trailer will arrive at your destination.

PODS® transit time depends on factors such as the availability of delivery vehicles and the distance to the delivery location.

Payment Requirements

U-Pack does not require an up-front payment. Just reserve with a credit card (no holds or charges are placed on the card) and pay for your move once your belongings are in transit. We recommend reserving as soon as possible to lock in your rates and equipment availability.

If you move long distance with PODS®, payment is required 5 days before delivery day.
