U-Pack compared to cargo van rental

If you’re moving a small amount, you may be thinking about one-way cargo van rental. Some consider them easier to drive than a large moving truck, but the problem often comes in finding one to rent. Let's take a look at who offers these services, then we'll introduce you to U-Pack, an affordable alternative to renting a cargo van and driving it yourself.

Having trouble locating a one-way van rental? Consider U-Pack instead.

Who offers cargo van rental one way?

None of the big 4 truck rental companies offer one-way cargo van rentals (long distance).

  • U-Haul® cargo vans are for local rental only.
  • Ryder® offers round-trip rental only (no one-way van options).
  • Budget® doesn't offer cargo vans for rental.
  • Penske® doesn't offer cargo vans for rental.

So where can you get a cargo van for a one-way rental? Local car rental locations sometimes offer them for rental. Though the cost could be more than you would expect — one-way rental normally cost more than renting and returning to the same location.

As we mentioned before, there is a way to move your belongings when you don't need a large rental truck. With U-Pack, you pack and load, and we handle the driving. If you estimate that all of your belongings will fit inside a small cargo van, you should find U-Pack's minimum space just right.

One-way cargo van alternative

U-Pack offers two different types of equipment: ReloCube containers and moving trailers. Take a look at how they compare:

  • The inside capacity of a U-Haul 9' cargo van is 245 cubic feet.
  • A U-Pack ReloCube is 6’ x 7’ x 8’ and has a loading capacity of approximately 305 cubic feet.
  • Our moving trailers are (28’ x 8’ x 9’), however, you can use as little as 5 linear feet inside. So, the minimum is approximately 360 cubic feet.

Either way, when you move one-way with U-Pack, you don’t have to drive. We deliver the equipment to your home, you load it up, and then we drive it across the country to your new home. It’s easier than trying to track down a cargo van rental, and it frees you up to travel however you want instead of being behind the wheel of the van the entire time. Sound like a good option? Save money with U-Pack

If you were considering a one-way van rental because of the low price, consider how you can save with U-Pack:

Fuel. Rental trucks don't include fuel in the price, but U-Pack does! No surprises at the pump.

Money saving options. While a standard U-Pack move includes door-to-door delivery, you can choose to load, unload (or both) at the service center closest to you. This is especially beneficial for small moves.

Flexible space. If you choose the ReloCube option, you can reserve as many as you think you’ll need, but only pay for the ones you actually use. With the trailer option, you can use as little as 5 linear feet or up to the entire trailer, in one linear foot increments. Your moving quote includes a “per foot rate” so you can see the cost of each additional foot of space. Customers love the flexibility.
