Moving to Washington? Here’s what you should know!

If you are moving to the Evergreen State, there are a few things you should know! U-Pack knows all about moving to Washington State. Here’s what you should know about the weather, the geography, and how to actually move to Washington.

Moving to Washington State: The Weather

The weather depends greatly on where you move in the state. Western Washington’s weather is greatly influenced by the ocean, and the east has a drier climate in the Cascades. For the entire state, low pressure systems from the Pacific Ocean are pretty much permanent fixtures. Winds and cool air are the norm. In the fall, the winds change and they bring warmer, wet weather. Washington has a pretty mild temperature range, with averages being in the 50s. The state is known for fog, cloud cover, and drizzles. Summers are nice and sunny, with chances of snow in the winter.

Moving to Washington State: The Geography

Washington is part of the Pacific Northwest region. There are several regions of Washington. The Cascade Mountains split the state in two parts. West of the Cascades is the coastal area with dense forests, hence the state’s nickname – The Evergreen State. East Washington has several different geographical areas. There are some arid desserts in an area called the rainshadow (Walla Walla, Kennewick, and Yakima). There are also grassland areas, farmland areas, and fresh water lakes (Leavenworth). The Cascades contain several volcanoes including Mt. Rainier, which is the most dangerous volcano in the U.S. based on its proximity to Seattle. You will want to choose your new home in Washington based on what type of landscape you enjoy as Washington offers just about everything!
