Moving Service Costs Explained

What goes into the price of a moving service?

Several factors contribute to your final price when moving. Depending on which type of moving service you choose, those factors will either help you save on your move or end up adding to your cost. Let's dive into the list of things that can play a part in the total investment you make.  By looking at these elements, you’ll better understand which service best fits your needs and budget.

Here’s how the pieces of the puzzle fit together to make up your total cost.

Equipment. The central component of any moving service is the equipment.  Options vary from moving trailers, rental trucks, moving containers or a moving van. The equipment is an important piece of the puzzle because the option you choose determines a large portion of your cost.

One important factor is whether you pay for the entire truck or the space you use. If you’re renting the entire equipment, it’s important to get the right size. With some options, like truck rental, you pay for the whole container regardless of how much you use.  So you'll want to take great care in estimating your space, so you don't pay for more space than you need.  On the other hand, a moving service such as U-Pack has flexible space where you pay for the space you use, which provides a more adjustable price option.

Transportation. There are two choices for transportation – either you drive, or they drive. While you can save a little bit of money by doing the driving yourself, like with truck rental, you also have to consider your time and the stress of driving a big truck. And don’t forget if you drive, there will be added costs such as fuel and tolls.

For a moving service where you don’t have to drive, there are options. Full-service movers do the driving for you, but often they can take 4-6 weeks to deliver your belongings, which can be inconvenient (not to mention expensive to have them do all the work!). The middle of the road option is using a “you pack, we drive” service like U-Pack because you get door-to-door delivery with average transit times of just 2-5 business days. It's an excellent option for those who want to save money, but don’t want to drive.

Liability coverage. Liability coverage means different things for each moving service. For truck rental companies, you can choose to pay extra to cover the truck during your move in case you get into any accidents. Meanwhile, movers may provide full-value coverage since they do all the packing, loading, driving, and unloading. With U-Pack, every move includes standard liability coverage.

Fuel. When moving long distance, fuel is always a factor - whether it's an extra cost, as with a truck rental, or built into a moving quote from U-Pack. If your quote doesn't include fuel, make sure you factor it in as an extra cost. We have a rental truck fuel calculator to help you plan.

Labor. If you want help doing some of the work, it’s another cost factor to consider. Full-service movers include packing, loading, and unloading into their estimates – but brace yourself! Full-service movers often come with the highest price tags. If you want to add labor to your U-Pack move, we can connect you to help loading or unloading available at affordable hourly rates.

Packing materials. Don't forget to consider the costs of packing materials. Full-service movers may include packing materials, but boxes and moving supplies will be a separate cost for every other type of moving service. To help you save on your packing materials, U-Pack offers affordable moving boxes, and customers get 10% off moving kits with a U-Pack reservation.

How to lower the cost of a moving service

If you want to keep your costs low, check out these money-saving options.

Be flexible with your move date. Every moving service has peak times, with summer being the busy season, and typically the weekends and end of the month being the peak times every month. Just like airfare, there are cheaper rates on off-peak days. If you’re flexible with your move date, U-Pack can help you find the cheapest date available during your window of time. Just call a moving consultant at 800-413-4799 for help.

Load or unload at a service center. A great way to save on your move is to load, unload (or both) at a U-Pack service center. We have over 240 service centers around the country – and you can really save by cutting out the door-to-door delivery. You can borrow or rent a truck to move your belongings to or from the service center.  This money saving option is great to cut costs and it’s also ideal if you're moving a small amount or have parking issues at your home.

Move less stuff. Since you pay for the space you use, if you can save space by moving less, you can save even more. As you pack, get rid of any unwanted items. Make piles to donate, sell, or trash – and you'll see savings on your moving service costs by paying to move less stuff.
