Ideas for saying goodbye to your old home
Saying goodbye can be extremely difficult, especially if the thing you’re saying goodbye to is the home you love dearly. After all, home is where the majority of our fondest memories are made. If you’re in the process of moving to a new home, and having a hard time letting go of the old, here are some great ideas to help you say goodbye and still hold on to the memories:
- Take lots of pictures – inside and out. Think about the special places that you might want to tell stories about – like walls with children’s measurements and places where you have special memories – and take pictures of those places. My mother just recently moved out of my childhood home, and before I drove down the driveway for the last time, I took pictures of the tree in the front yard that I ran into during my first driving experience, the view from the back window to the pond, the little-tiny bathroom four girls and my mom shared... all of those things that I might want to show my children some day when I tell them about the home I grew up in.
- Create a video montage. Similar to pictures, this is a great way to capture the entire space. Try a commentary, walking room-by-room, telling stories, talking about fun memories etc. This is a great project to involve the entire family in!
- Find a way to stay connected to the house. Maybe this is by carving your initials in a favorite tree, putting your handprints in cement, taking a seed from a tree and planting it in your new yard, uprooting a favorite shrub or small tree and replanting it at your new place, or placing a favorite memory of the house inside a time capsule and burying it.
- Write a note to the new owners telling them everything you loved most about the house. Wish them as much joy and happiness as you had in the home. If you’re especially lucky, they may even write back or invite you for a visit.
