How to move to the city

September 25th, 2012 - 2:52 PM

If you’re moving to a large city, like New York, Chicago, Boston, D.C., etc., you’ve got some challenges that are unique to “city moving,” like parking, narrow streets, loading and unloading times, etc.

That’s where U-Pack comes in. Though it can be somewhat of a logistical challenge in several of these locations, the service centers are accustomed to delivering in these areas and are typically able to offer reasonable solutions.

First things first, request an online moving quote to determine serviceability in your area. In larger cities, it’s best to enter your actual zip codes (if you know them) because serviceability can change from zip code to zip code (specifically in Chicago, NYC and New Orleans). If your quote shows a price for moving to or from a service center, that’s a pretty good indication that it’s an area we are not able to service direct. If that’s the case, make sure to call to speak with a U-Pack representative – occasionally the terminal is able to make an exception.

Once serviceability to your door is verified, your next step is to get parking permits. They’re required in almost all large cities. Where you’ll get these permits varies by city – start with the street department or the police department. But before you call or visit, be sure to take not of how much space you’ll need to park the moving trailer or park/deliver the ReloCube(s).

Some Unique U-Pack City Moving Solutions
If parking space is limited and heavy traffic is non-stop, a door-to-door move may not necessarily out of the question. In some areas we’re able to do what’s called a “live load” or “live un-load.” That simply means that the driver stays with the trailer or ReloCube while it’s being loaded. In some locations only one-hour live loads are allowed, while in some 3-4 hours are allowed. The ability to do a live-load and the amount of time allowed varies from terminal to terminal (and sometimes city to city within a terminal).

Same Day Load/Unload
Occasionally you’re in a situation where getting the moving trailer or ReloCube in and out isn’t a problem, it’s just that the city, neighborhood association or apartment management will not allow overnight parking of the equipment. If that’s the case, call 800-413-4799 and ask your U-Pack representative if a “Same day drop off and pick-up is available.”

Delivery to an alternate location
Let’s say that it’s just impossible to park the moving trailer or ReloCube close to your home. Do you have an alternative location for parking? Maybe there’s a neighboring street or business close by where you could park the equipment (make sure to get permission). U-Pack can deliver the equipment wherever you have a safe, legal location.

Load/unload at the local service center
If parking isn’t available, and you’re unable to find an alternative location, you can always come to us (and save significantly). Select a door-to-terminal move. You’ll load your items at your old home (or at the origin terminal to save even more money), and then unload at the service center closest to your location. This option works best for small moves but is available for moves of all sizes.
