How Far in Advance Should I Book a Moving Company?
Scheduling a move
You’ve got a move on the horizon and a lot of things to do. You know you need to start packing, find a new place to live and, at some point, book a moving company. But how much notice do they need — is two months too early? What if you’re short on time and only have a week or two — is it too late? Get the answers to these questions and learn the best way to schedule a move with U-Pack®.
The benefits of booking in advance
There are many advantages to booking a move early, so you’ll want to get started as soon as possible. Begin researching moving services a couple months out, and book with 6-8 weeks of heads up so you won’t have to worry about that piece of the move. Booking early will also help you receive:
- Guaranteed equipment. Moving companies have a limited number of trucks, trailers and containers, so it’s possible for them to run out of equipment during certain times of the year. Reserving early can help guarantee availability, but make sure to confirm that with the company you choose (some don’t guarantee until closer to the move date).
- Locked in rates. Moving rates can change over time, especially as fuel prices fluctuate. Reserving early will lock in the price, so you can budget accordingly.
- Plenty of planning time. Knowing the exact date makes it easier to schedule tasks. To get an idea of when things should be completed, try using a moving checklist that breaks everything into weekly to-do lists.
- More options. Some companies require more planning time than others, but starting early means you have time to get multiple quotes and compare options.
Ready to reserve? As long as you know where and when you’re moving (even just a zip code and ballpark date), it’s time to call!
What if I’m moving last minute?
If you’re moving on short notice, call the moving company as soon as you can. The closer it gets to the move date, the fewer options you’ll have. For example, a full-service moving company requires an in-home estimate and involves more coordination since you’ll need a driver and movers available on the same day. Since multiple steps are needed, this service can take several weeks to arrange. While rental trucks can usually be reserved quickly, you may have to call several companies and locations to get the equipment you need. When booking, be sure the equipment you reserve will be there on your move date (you may have to adjust the date based on availability).
