10 reasons why moving is good for you

July 3rd, 2012 - 1:27 PM
After living in a small town all of my life (even through graduate school), my husband and I moved to a city a little over an hour away to begin careers. I lived in different places during the summer, but always returned back to my hometown for fall college classes; so as you can imagine, I was a little nervous about moving to a new place for longer than two months. Now that I’ve lived in this new place for a while, I’ve realized that the move has been good for me in many ways.

Check out these 10 reasons why moving is good for you, then get a free moving quote from U-Pack!
  1. A new place means discovering a new you. You’ll be around all new people and probably taking on a new way of living. Moving provides a great way to continually shape the person you are and the person you want to be.
  2. Moving allows you to meet new friends. Have you ever heard the quote, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold?” While the author is unknown, you can embrace this quote as your new motto for making new friends when you move.
  3. Moving means change. Whatever reason you have for moving, change will provide both new opportunities and challenges. It’s fun to see what’s in store for you after you move.
  4. Moving brings about new adventures. Location Fact—wherever you move to is going to be different from where you’ve been. Don’t be a homebody. Once you’re settled in, get out and see how the new location differs from the old one. You may just discover a new hobby depending on the location you’re moving to, like climbing or skiing!
  5. A new city means new food experiences. One of my favorite things about moving is getting to try out different places to eat. If you’re moving to another region of the U.S., your palate will be in for a real treat with new foods to experience!
  6. Moving brings with it new things to see and do. Your new location will have events and traditions that your old location doesn’t have. Talk to locals about popular town events, then get involved! Being a part of something will help you feel like you are “fitting in” better, especially if you’re from a town you’ve lived in all your life (like me).
  7. A new place is a new opportunity to get more done. If you’re from a town where everybody  knows everybody, it might be refreshing to be able to walk into the grocery store and not spend 40 minutes small talking with the neighbors that live down the street. If dinner is made sooner because you’re in and out in a flash, you’ll have more family time after dinner.
  8. Moving gives you a fresh start when it comes to finances. Depending on your location, your cost of living will increase or decrease. If it increases, you’ll learn how to budget your money better, making you a smart spender! If it decreases, you’ll save money by not being in high cost of living location. It’s a win-win!
  9. Moving is a good opportunity for change. I saw a pin on Pinterest that said, “If you don’t like where you are, then change it. You are not a tree.”  It’s true; if you don’t like your new location, go somewhere else.
  10. Moving is great for reflection. If you've been living in your new location for a while, write down the good things you've experienced from moving to a new place. Maybe you've saved money, found a new favorite lunch spot, discovered a new hobby, or make a new best friend!
