PCSing to Hawaii - Preparing for an Assignment in Paradise

February 2nd, 2012 - 3:31 PM
Military life has its ups and downs, but sometimes the adventure can outweigh the adversity. Take moving, for example. Frequently pulling up roots is part of the job, but sometimes service members can hit the jackpot with an exotic locale. For many, the ideal duty station can be found in the tropical isles of Hawaii.

PCSing to Hawaii sounds like a dream assignment for many, but when the orders arrive, some families can feel overwhelmed with questions about moving to the islands and island living.

Fun Winter Festivals and Events

February 1st, 2012 - 3:28 PM
Not to brag, because this doesn’t happen very often, and I definitely don’t want to jinx it, but Arkansas is experiencing some amazing (granted unseasonal) spring-like weather.  It’s January and today’s high is 68° and it’s supposed to be in the 70’s by the end of the week!  This time last year we were about to experience record-breaking snow falls in the area.  We’ll take it!

Miki Markovich of Ground, Path, and Fruition used U-Pack for her personal move a few years back and had a great experience. So when it came time for Miki to help move her 86-year-old grandmother more than 2,200 miles across the United States, Miki knew U-Pack was the moving company she would trust once more. Here's the awesome part: because U-Pack does the driving, Miki and her grandmother Regina were able to take the road trip of a lifetime without worrying about their household goods.

Exactly Where are People Moving?

January 27th, 2012 - 10:47 AM
The 2011 U-Pack Moving Trends Infographic was just released!

If you’ve ever wondered where people are moving, the most popular times they move, and how far in advance they start getting moving quotes, now’s your chance to check it out.

I’ll go ahead and give a little spoiler – what state would you guess topped the list of the most inbound moves in 2011 (that’s the “moving to” location)?  Here’s a hint: It’s as far west as you can get in the U.S., and it’s not Oregon or Washington...

Best States for Skiing and Snowboarding | Infographic

January 25th, 2012 - 2:22 PM

It’s that time of year again folks, people are starting to plan Spring Break vacays!  While tropical locations are probably most popular, many spring breakers plan to head to cold-weather, powder-laden destinations for a little fun in the snow.

This infographic naming the five states with the most ski and snowboard mountains comes at a perfect time for vacationers, but it’s also good info for folks planning to move.  How exciting to move to a location where a weekend skiing trip is a short drive away.  Check it out!

Things to Donate When Moving

January 24th, 2012 - 10:32 AM

If you’re like me, the idea of packing up a house feels overwhelming (especially one you’ve lived in for a long time).  It undoubtedly means sifting through some drawers, cabinets and closets that you haven’t dealt with in a while.

Not so appealing.

Of course, you could just choose a moving service with packing and loading help and let an experienced crew come in and do everything for you—get it all packed up and worry about what you need and don’t need once you get moved into your new home.  That’s definitely the easy way, but probably not a great approach if you’re also trying to save a little money.

Top 5 West Coast Wineries | Infographic

January 18th, 2012 - 10:33 AM
If you’re moving to the West Coast—specifically Oregon, Washington or California, you may be pleased to know that you’re moving to areas where you have first-hand access to some of the tastiest wine in the country. According to Food & Wine Magazine the West Coast is the home to the top vineyards in the U.S.   And when you consider that wine grapes need at least 1,400 hours of annual sunlight during the growing season to ripen properly, it makes sense that this portion of the country would be optimal.

How Moving Companies Have Changed the U.S. Landscape

January 11th, 2012 - 3:41 PM
Since 1790 the U.S. census has been tracking the mean center of the U.S. population. According to this infographic, titled How Moving Companies are Changing the U.S. Landscape, at first count it was 23 miles east of Baltimore, but over the years it has moved steadily west, and more recently south.  I’m certain I would have never guessed the current population center (as of the 2010 census).  Plato, Missouri — an incorporated village in Texas County, Missouri with a population of only around 2,000.

How Rental Truck Insurance Works

By Derek
January 5th, 2012 - 9:28 AM

You’re moving, right? Does it sometimes feel like there’'s no end to your “to-do” list?  I hate to add to your already hectic day, but if you’'re considering a rental truck for your move, there’'s one more thing you’'ll need to think about (if you haven'’t already) —INSURANCE.  Ugh. Not really what you want to deal with on top of everything else, but it’'s definitely necessary.  If you haven'’t talked to your agent in a while, now’'s the time.

Wrapping Up My Cross Country Move with U-Pack

December 29th, 2011 - 4:58 PM

What's the hardest thing about moving across the country? Besides figuring out how to keep your plants alive and remembering where you packed the bottle opener (keep it in your purse – you'll thank me later).

Some might say that packing sends them into a frenzy, or maybe it's figuring out the logistics – apartment hunting from 2,000 miles away is kind of a pain. But for me, the hardest part is always the first step: getting quotes from movers.
