The term ‘Self-Move’ pretty much explains what a self-move is.  Basically, it’s a move that you do yourself, right?  Well yes, but there are different types of self-moves. 

The Basic Self-Move
You pack, you load, you drive, you do everything.   An example of this would be a rental truck service. You pick up the equipment from the rental truck location, you pack and load it, you drive it to your new home, you unload it and you return it to the rental truck location. With this type of service you’re responsible for fuel charges, mileage, insurance, damage to the vehicle, taxes and all other transportation charges.

The Premier Self-Move
You pack, you load, and someone else drives and provides the equipment. An example of this is ABF U-Pack Moving.  How the “you pack, we drive” type services work often varies, but with U-Pack, all you are responsible for is packing, loading and unloading. Fuel charges, mileage, taxes, and road tolls are all included in the quoted price. If you choose a door-to-door service, the equipment is brought to your home for loading and picked up from your home after you unload.

Oftentimes, the price for a “you pack, we drive” self-move is comparable to the price of a rental truck when you take fuel, taxes and other transportation charges into account.  Check out the fuel calculator to see how much you’re likely to spend on fuel if you drive a rental truck.

Keep in mind that if you want the convenience of a full service mover, but don’t want to pay the price of a full service moving company, you can coordinate loading/unloading with moving companies such as Albert Moving or Moving Staffers. Then, you have the convenience of a full-service move for about half the price. Cool, huh!
