What is a pod?

It's Flashback Friday!  Each week, U-Pack revisits a blog topic that has been helpful to our readers.  This weeks' flashback is the "What is a pod?" post.  I think by now, most people are at least familiar with the concept of a pod, but there are so many pod-type moving containers available now, so this is a good resource for explaining how the ReloCube (U-Pack's version of the pod) compares.  Happy Friday!

By definition, anything that is used to contain or store something can be called a pod.  For example, Apple iTunes® are stored in an iPod®, the vessel holding peas is called a pod, etc.  And now, people call containers used for moving and storage pods (thanks to PODS®--the company with the same name).  In fact, it's not unusual for customers to call U-Pack with the question, "Do you have a pod available?"  Our pod-type containers are called ReloCubes, and customers love them!

U-Pack's Version of a Pod
The ReloCube® is a 6'x7'x8' (LWH) container that holds approximately 1.5 rooms of furniture— or the furnishings of a studio apartment.   But if you're moving a larger home, they still work great!  You can reserve as many as you need, but pay only for what you use.  They also fit easily into a standard parking space – very convenient if you're moving out of an apartment complex.

U-Pack delivers the ReloCube right to your door.  You load it and put your own lock on it, and we pick it up and move it to your new location— the absolute simplest way to do a self-move.

ReloCube Construction
Most of the moving pod containers you'll see are constructed of some combination of wood and plastic.  Not a good combo when you consider elements like rain and snow.  U-Pack's ReloCube is weather-proof and made of steel and aluminum. It weighs 1,500 lbs empty.  Each one can hold up to 2,500 lbs.  It's also equipped with tie-down points throughout the interior for tying and securing your shipment for safe transit.

ReloCube Delivery
ReloCubes are delivered and picked up at your home or storage facility using a flatbed trailer and a forklift.  Because of its convenient size and the maneuverability of the forklift, we can get the ReloCubes into some fairly tight places.  This may not be the case with other large pod-type containers.  After your loaded ReloCube gets back to the local ABF service center, it will be placed into one of our commercial trailers for the long distance trip to your destination.

How Much does it Cost to Move in a ReloCube?
Getting a free moving quote is easy. Just enter your moving from and to locations, an estimated move date and the size of your home (here's a moving space estimator if you need it), and we'll gladly send you an instant price.  Compare U-Pack to other pod services and you'll typically see a significant savings.

Whether you're moving a studio apartment or a whole house, U-Pack ReloCubes are an affordable, convenient, and secure option.  After you look at all of your options, I think you'll agree that ReloCubes are better than other pod-type containers – especially when you compare the cost, quality and convenience!

We recommend two Relocubes for a one bedroom apartment. You might be able to get by with just one if the apartment is lighlty furnished. There would be no charge for the second cube if you don’t use it.

The ReloCube weighs 1500lbs but you say the cube holds up to 2500lb. Does the 2500lb include the weight of the ReloCube, meaning I can only add 1000lb of stuff? Or can I add 2500lb of stuff with a final weight of 4000lb?

You can load up to 2,500lbs of goods into the ReloCube. We do not charge by weight. We just don't want you to overload the lifting capacity(4,000lbs) of the forklift. If you think your load will be too heavy for a ReloCube, we also have the partial trailer option that can handle more weight.
