Comparing U-Pack and U-Haul box stores

It’s important to use quality moving supplies from a reputable company when you’re making a long distance move. Both the U-Pack box store and the U-Haul box store offer these types of supplies—designed with moving in mind. To help you make the decision on the best place to purchase your boxes, we’ve taken a quick high-level overview of each store’s supplies and policies. While you’ll find a wide variety of products from both stores, we think you’ll discover that when compared to U-Haul’s store, U-Pack provides the best selection and prices on everything you need to move your belongings safely across the country.

U-Haul boxes compared to U-Pack boxes

How they compare

As mentioned, both the U-Pack store and the U-Haul store offer a wide range of boxes and moving supplies with comparable pricing; however, there are a few unique products U-Pack offers that are specific to the needs of people doing a DIY long-distance move. And, while the shipping and cancellation policies are similar, there are some unique differences to be aware of. Let’s take a look at how we compare, and see why the U-Pack box store may be the best option for purchasing your boxes and moving supplies.

Moving kits

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when deciding how many boxes you need to pack up an entire house. Though both U-Pack and U-Haul offer moving kits to simplify the process, the ones available from U-Haul may be a bit ambiguous. These moving kits group home sizes together (apartment, 1-2 bedrooms, 3-4 bedrooms), while the U-Pack store offers moving kits specific to the size of your home (studio apartment, 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms, 3 bedrooms, etc.). And if you’re moving a large home, U-Pack offers moving kits that hold a 6+ bedroom home, while U-Haul box kits stop at 4+.

Another great feature about U-Pack moving kits is the set price. Besides taxes, what you see is what you’ll pay. U-Haul moving kit prices can vary depending on additional supplies you purchase.

When you move with U-Pack there are two options: a 28 ft. trailer or a ReloCube®. Our moving supply store has moving kits specifically designed to fit our customer’s needs when moving in our equipment. Check out the ReloCube accessory kit for a convenient way to purchase a padlock, furniture pads and utility rope for tying down your belongings.

Products

While the two companies offer many of the same box sizes and options, in some cases the dimensions and prices differ — compare to see which is the better deal for your needs.  For example:

U-Haul lamp boxes measure 12” x 12” x 40” while the U-Pack lamp box measures 12” x 12” x 48” (giving you an extra 8 inches in height). The U-Pack box provides more space to pack floor lamps and can be used for uniquely-shaped items like golf clubs and telescopes.

Another great product comparison is moving blankets. The U-Haul store sells only two types of moving blankets, one which is designed solely for covering furniture. The U-Pack store sells three types that are multipurpose. U-Pack moving blankets include:

  • Textile furniture pads. This type of moving blanket is not available in the U-Haul store, but is very valuable when moving lightweight wooden furniture and for protecting items packed in boxes.
  • Economy blankets. These are comparable to U-Haul’s furniture pads. Our economy blankets
  • measure 72” x 80” and weigh 3.58 lbs. while U-Haul furniture pads are 68” x 85” and weigh 2.85 lbs. Ours offer more length and weigh more, providing greater protection for your heavier furniture items.
  • Deluxe blankets. These are the same dimensions as U-Haul quilted pads, but U-Pack deluxe blankets are heavier. The U-Haul pads weigh 4.6 lbs. while U-Pack deluxe blankets weigh 5.42 lbs.

U-Pack sells blankets in bundles, while U-Haul blankets are sold individually. If you’re moving a larger house and need multiple deluxe blankets, our bundle pricing for four, six or twelve deluxe moving blankets is normally the better deal!

Shipping

While U-Pack offers free shipping on ALL box store orders, U-Haul provides free shipping for any orders over $50.

In most cases, U-Pack estimated delivery times are shorter. We’re able to provide box store shipping services anywhere in the continental U.S. with an estimated delivery time of 1-3 business days. If you place an order before 4 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, it will ship that day.  According to the U-Haul box store, orders need to be placed by 10 a.m. CST to ship that day. You can choose from these options: priority (2-3 business days), express (1-2 business days) or freight (5-12 business days; the only shipping option for oversized items). Shipping charges vary depending on the shipping option selected.

Tracking shipment orders

To make your experience easy, we provide a simple way to track your box store order. As soon as your order is placed, we’ll send a confirmation email that includes a link to check the status of your order any time. You can also visit the U-Pack box store page and click track my order.  Just type in your order number and email address to locate your shipment — no username or password required!

To track a U-Haul box order, an account with a username and password is required, and you would need to log into the account to track your shipment. Or, from the home page, you can click “sign in/look up order” and enter your order number and last name to track the shipment.

Cancellation policies

If you order the wrong product, it’s important to have an easy way to correct the problem. No one wants to run into roadblocks when it comes to cancellations! U-Pack makes returns easy. You can stop a shipment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday – Friday via Ecare Customer service or by calling 855-707-1499. In order to avoid fees, cancellations must be made by 4 p.m. the day the order is schedule to ship. If the shipment is already in transit, there is an intercept fee of $12.90 per package and a $5 restocking fee per package. Either way, you don’t have to deal with the hassle of returning something you wanted to cancel as long as it’s cancelled prior to going out for delivery.

To cancel orders with U-Haul, you’ll need to fill out a customer service form before the item leaves the warehouse. If the order has already shipped, you’ll need to wait until it arrives, then pay return shipping.
