Lowering the cost of moving to Hawaii

Whether you're just starting to think about moving to Hawaii or if you already have your plane ticket in hand, let me just go ahead and say that I'm jealous!  Even if you're concerned about the cost of moving to Hawaii, remember that you're moving to a tropical paradise.  Sparkling waters, crashing waves, a beautiful landscape— can't you already smell the hibiscus flowers just thinking about it?  That being said, it's a good idea to have a financial plan for your move to the islands.  Where do you start?  Here are a few suggestions for controlling your moving budget:

Cut the cost of moving to Hawaii by choosing low-traffic move dates.  Moves that occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day fall into the peak moving season, when moving companies are at full capacity.  Choosing an off-peak date can mean lower moving rates, plus a less hectic moving schedule.

Paring down your possessions can lower the cost of moving to Hawaii even further.  The more items you have to move, the more space you'll need.  Reducing the size of your shipment helps lower your cost.

For small moves, consider loading and unloading at ABF Service Centers.  If you're not moving a lot of things, loading up at a local ABF office (called a ’terminal') can cut out extra costs.  Bring your belongings to the terminal and load them into an ABF U-Pack moving container or two, then unload at the terminal in Honolulu.  This is a great way to save on overall costs.

We’re in the process of moving to Hawaii and aside from getting some great used cardboard boxes, I think your post is excellent. I especially appreciate the point you made about paring down the items that you’re going to be taking with you. I’ve got so much stuff, I don’t know where to start. LOL. Keep up the good work.

If you’re moving to Hawaii, you’ll also need to set up phone and internet service! This might not be at the top of your list when moving, but Mobi PCS has excellent Hawaii cell phone service and internet service at great prices.

Derek, I have some freight questions regarding a move to Hilo in December. I would like to be able to get quote information based on a move from either of your California ports to Hilo and also from my current location in the Gulf Coast region.

My wife and I are preparing for our move to Oahu this coming March. We are in the process of trying to find a smaller container for our things we plan to take, but can’t find anything under 10 feet.

Hi Derek.. I am moving to Hawaii on Monday and frantically trying to figure out how to ship my office chair which cannot be disassembled. I came across the ReloCube and am stoked. Only problem is I have no idea how much it costs for one cube. Can you get me an estimate? I have 4 boxes 20x20x24, a queen size bed and Herman Miller type office chair. Their offices don’t open until tomorrow and I need to continue my research. Thanks.

after some more reading, I think the palatalizing option may be the way to go. Can you call or email me with an estimate? Thanks!

I am moving from NJ to HI and trying to decide how much of my household items to take (or simply get rid of everything and start all over). Can you give me an idea how much your 6x7x8 vs. 20’ container costs?
Thank you,
Jack Edmunds

Mr. Edmunds, our offices are closed today in observance of the New Year's holiday; we will open back up Tuesday at 7 a.m. CST. Though most moving from/moving to locations will allow for an instant online quote, a quote to Hawaii will need to be completed manually by an analyst. I will have one of our Hawaii moving experts to contact you via email as quickly as possible tomorrow. Thanks!
