What are my cross-country furniture shipping options?
It’s time. You’ve sold your current home and found a new one in a new city on the opposite side of the map. Moving day is coming up fast, so you have to figure out how to ship your furniture across the country without draining your bank account.
You have a few options:
- Pay more to have full-service movers do it all.
- Pay less and do it all yourself – packing, loading, and driving
- Still pay less and let professionals do the driving while you do the loading and unloading.
The most convenient and economical solution – #3. And U-Pack is the perfect alternative.
Here’s how U-Pack ships furniture across the country:
We’ll deliver a trailer or ReloCubes (whichever you reserve) to your location and you can have up to three business days to load. When you’re finished, simply call the local service center to schedule pickup. We average transit times of 2-5 business days, and once we deliver your furniture shipment, you can have up to three business days to unload. Just call the local service center when you’re finished to schedule pick up.
How much does it cost to ship furniture across the country?
While it’s not possible to provide a blanket answer to this question (because rates fluctuate based on how much you’re moving, where you’re moving and when you’re moving), getting an online moving quote is simple with U-Pack. Just enter the basic details about your move, and you can see the price instantly.
Your price is based on the linear footage your shipment occupies in the trailer (or the number of Cubes you use).
There’s no down payment or deposit – we need a credit card to reserve, but you don’t have to pay anything until after your shipment is loaded and you know exactly how much space you need.
Tips for shipping your furniture safely
If a “you pack, we drive” service sounds ideal for shipping your furniture cross country, here are a few packing and loading tips to protect your belongings while they’re in transit:
Use proper packing materials. Most pieces of furniture aren't designed to fit neatly into standard moving boxes, so use supplies such as sofa covers, chair covers, furniture pads, mattress bags, paper moving pads, and stretch wrap to keep items protected from scratches.
Disassemble bulky items. You can make packing and loading easier (and use less space) by breaking down tables, entertainment centers, and desks. If possible, remove chair legs, desk hutches, and shelving, and wrap each piece separately. Then, place all hardware in a storage bag and tape it securely to the furniture (though not on the finish) for easier re-assembly after the move.
Keep sofas and mattresses clear of sharp objects. Sofa covers, chair covers and plastic mattress bags are helpful for shielding your furniture from road dust while it’s traveling across the country. If these aren’t available, you can also cover them completely with plastic stretch wrap or moving blankets. Avoid loading mattresses, sofas, or chairs next to items with sharp corners to protect against punctures or tears.
- Get help with moving the big stuff. Though hiring help may not be necessary, you definitely don’t want to attempt to load large pieces of furniture on your own, so find friends and family to help (pizza and drinks goes a log way)! You may also want to consider forearm forklift moving straps and a moving dolly for the really big stuff.
