Self-Moving Companies: How Does it Work?

July 27th, 2015 - 2:41 PM

What is a self-move?

Because it’s such a descriptive word, you may have already deduced that a self-move is a move that you do by yourself. Because you do some (or all) of the work, it’s a solution that’s known to cost significantly less than full-service moving. What’s important to note, though, is that there are a couple of different “levels” – if you will – of self-moving.

Your self-moving options

We’ll call the first level a “basic” self-move. Truck rental is the best example of this. You pick up and return the rental truck, and you pack, load and drive. Basically, you do it all – including paying for fuel.

We’ll call the second a “premier” self-move. U-Pack Moving is a great example of this type of service. You do the loading and unloading, and a professional does the driving – and fuel is included in the price.

How do self-moving companies charge and how much does it cost?

Naturally, because you’re doing at least some of the work, self-moving is an excellent way to save money on a long-distance move.

With a basic self-move (i.e. truck rental), the price is normally based on the distance between the origin and destination, the size of the truck and the move date (whether it’s a peak or off-peak time). Most quotes will include the rental truck rate and a set number of days and miles to complete the move. If any extras are selected, like a tow dolly, moving supplies, damage coverage, etc., they’ll be included in the quote as well.

With a premier self-move (i.e. U-Pack), prices are based on where you’re moving from and to, how much you’re moving and when you’re moving. But here’s the big difference: U-Pack charges by how much space you use – not by truck size. You can load into a moving trailer and pay for the linear footage your shipment occupies inside, or you can reserve as many ReloCubes® as you think you’ll need, and pay only for the ones you use.

To figure out how much you can save doing a self-move, we recommend starting with an online moving quote. U-Pack makes it quick and easy! And, if you prefer to speak directly with a moving consultant, we make that easy, too! Just call as at 800-413-4799 from 7am to 8pm CST.

Can I do a self-move from a residential neighborhood?

Absolutely! Self-moving is a great option for moving from a residential neighborhood. We’ll deliver the equipment right to your driveway or on the street – wherever you tell us to park it.  Before moving day, just make sure you have a safe, legal place to park (get permission and/or parking permits), and that there’s plenty of room for delivering the trailer or Cube. You can learn more about parking a trailer here, and parking a ReloCube here.

Can I do a self-move from an apartment or condo?

Yes! Self-moving is a great option for apartment dwellers, too. Especially if you’re moving on a tight budget. Just notify your landlord or apartment manager in advance to make sure there’s plenty of room for the equipment on moving day. Here are some things to talk about:

  • Your move-out date and when you expect to be completely finished
  • Your rental agreement (so you can get your deposit back)
  • A time to meet to return the key, do a final walk-through, and sign any papers
  • Requirements for parking the moving truck or container
  • Elevator use
  • Any other questions you have about moving out

How long do I have to load and unload?

We understand that it may take you a little longer than a day to load and unload your belongings. After all, it’s not something you do every day. In most locations, U-Pack gives you up to three business days on each end of your move. That means if we deliver to you on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, you get the weekend, too!  If you need it picked up sooner, or need longer, call a U-Pack Moving Consultant at 800-413-4799 to help find a solution!

What if I need help moving the big stuff? Can I still do a self-move?

You can! Even though it’s a self-moving company, you can hire labor by the hour to do some or all of the heavy lifting. We recommend getting a moving labor estimate from Moving Staffers.

How long does a self-move take?

With U-Pack, transit times average just 2-5 business days! Your U-Pack quote will include the estimated transit time for your move. If you need it there faster, or have a specific day you want it to arrive, you can also add U-Pack Guaranteed for a 100% on time guarantee.
