How to load a moving truck

Have you ever packed your car for a road trip? Making all those bags and pillows fit in the trunk can be like a real-life game of Tetris. Multiply that 10 times, and you can imagine the challenge of loading a moving truck. But, with a little help from our moving experts, you can load your truck efficiently, saving you time and money.

For most people, the whole point of doing the loading and unloading is to save money. But did you know you have an option where the price compares to truck rental, but you don’t have to drive? U-Pack is a moving service where you pack and load, and then U-Pack delivers your stuff right to your door. Check out these loading tips to help you efficiently load the moving truck.

Start by packing properly.

Before you can load the moving truck, you have to pack first. The biggest way to set yourself up for success in the loading process is to use professional moving supplies as you pack. Professional moving boxes are made for stacking, so they are easy to load. You’ll want to closely follow our packing tips and prepare your furniture and other items well, so they are ready for loading.

Gather loading supplies.

Our loading tips outline some valuable supplies that will really help on moving day. You’ll need:

  • Tarp or plastic sheeting
  • Furniture dolly
  • Ropes, moving straps or bungee cords
  • Gloves
  • Step-stool or small ladder

These supplies will help you to load and secure your belongings in the moving trailer.

Start loading!

Lay a tarp on the floor of the trailer to protect from dust, then begin loading your items. If you have a few people there helping, it’s nice to have people who stay in the truck arranging items while others carry things in.

Start by loading your belongings at the nose of the moving truck (near the cab) and work your way back. You’ll want to stack everything tightly, taking advantage of the full height of the moving trailer (that’s what the ladder is for!).

Load heavy items, like furniture and appliances, first. Keep heavy items on the bottom and place lighter items on top. As you load, secure items with rope or straps to keep them in place during transit.

If you need filler, bags of clothes or linens work well to fill odd-shaped spaces. You can place lightweight items like rolled rugs or plastic plants on top (just make sure to secure them well).

You’ll want to pack things high and tight. This not only works toward keeping your belongings secure in transit, but it also saves you money. See, with U-Pack, you only pay for the space you use, so using less space means spending less on your move. Your price will be adjusted once you’re finished loading.

Keep yourself safe during loading.

Along with keeping your stuff safe on moving day, you’ll also want to protect yourself while you’re loading. Wear lightweight, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Make sure you have enough help – if you need assistance with loading, just ask your U-Pack moving specialist, we can connect you with a network of experienced moving help.

Once you start loading, make sure you use a dolly to move heavy items, and lift boxes properly. Also, make sure you can see where you’re walking and avoid slippery, uneven surfaces. Use help supporting items as you carry them up the ramp.

Remember, with U-Pack, you have three days to load in most locations, so take your time.

Finish loading.

Once your items are loaded, you’ll need to put up the secure divider wall (we call it a bulkhead). The bulkhead isn’t designed to support the weight of your shipment, so be sure to secure your stuff well before installing it. We recommend you wear gloves while you’re installing it (just follow the attached directions).

After the bulkhead is installed, you’ll just load the ramp back into the trailer, then close it up! When that’s done, call the local terminal to schedule a time for pick up – the phone number is included in your Bill of Lading.

You don’t have to drive the moving truck!

Like I said before, you can save on your move by doing some of the work yourself. You can load the truck, but you don’t have to drive! Get a free moving quote from U-Pack to see how you can make your move easy and affordable.
