Researching Moving Companies - Show me your numbers….

When you start researching reputable moving companies, you'll notice that many websites like movingscam.com and safersys.org, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's website, suggest checking up on the moving companies' "numbers".  The "numbers" these sites are referring to are Bond, Department of Transportation (DOT), and Motor Carrier (MC) numbers.  Other numbers of interest include the length of time in business, accurate phone numbers and the size of the moving company.  The moving company you are considering should not have a problem readily providing these numbers.  So do not hesitate to ask and check.

ABF U-Pack's numbers:
DOT # – 082866
Bond # - 209 703 060
MC # - 299107342

For example, when searching ABF U-Pack's numbers on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's website, you will see that ABF is classified and regulated as an interstate motor carrier.  This means that ABF is able to carry many types of freight.  Since U-Pack is part of ABF, considerable cost savings can be passed along to you by combining commercial freight on the portion of the trailer you do not fill with your own household items.  The other moving freight will be items with a final destination of department stores, other businesses, etc.  But you don't have to worry because there will never be any dangerous items placed on the same moving trailer as your bedroom furniture!

I’m trying to research and make a final decision on moving companies and when I searched using you DOT & MC#’s, you couldn’t be found. The site I’m using to do research is www.protectyourmove.gov by the FMCSA.

Thanks for your great question!

Since ABF is an interstate carrier of all commodities – not just household goods like traditional moving companies - we are regulated by the DOT as an “all commodities” carrier. Use the FMCSA’s SAFER system at http://www.safersys.org/CompanySnapshot.aspx to view ABF’s company snapshot. Our DOT # is 082866.

Since you’re doing your research, you may already know the way ABF U-Pack operates. But just in case, I’ll give you an overview – which may make our “all commodities“ status (rather than ‘moving companies’ status) make more sense.

If you’re doing a U-Pack trailer move, ABF delivers an empty 28-foot moving trailer to your residence. You load and install a divider wall (we call a bulkhead)to separate your goods from commercial goods on the moving trailer. Once the moving trailer gets to our destination service center, we’ll unload the commercial goods and deliver the moving trailer to you. You are the only household move on the moving trailer and your items are not unloaded or transferred.

If you’ve chosen a ReloCube move, We’ll deliver an empty ReloCube to you. You load it, put your lock on it and keep the key. Your Cube is loaded into an ABF trailer for transport. Once it arrives at the destination service center, we unload it and deliver it to your new location.

I hope that helps! If you have other questions, please let us know!
