Rent a Truck

Do you want to rent a truck?

If you're trying to save money on a cross-country move, intuition may tell you that you have to rent a truck. And that thought may cause concerns that make you dread moving. Am I choosing the right size rental truck? Can I drive that far in a huge vehicle that I’m not familiar with? How am I going to drive it through large cities? How difficult will it be to tow my vehicle? Will my stuff be safe parked in a hotel parking lot overnight? Once I pay for gas, taxes and insurance, how much will it really cost to rent a truck? Is there a better way to move?

Your concerns are legitimate.

The great news is you can get a low-cost move without worrying about these things. While you won’t technically be “renting a truck,” (because you won’t be driving it), you can move across the country in the comfort of your own vehicle, and let an experienced driver move your belongings. And you can do it without having to pay for a higher priced full-service mover.

A “you pack, we drive” service like U-Pack is the perfect solution and a great alternative to renting a truck and driving it yourself.

How can I move and not rent a truck?

You can do the packing, loading, and unloading, and let someone else do the driving. That’s how you make moving affordable without renting a truck. When you get a quote, you’ll see that the rates compare to truck rental, but you get so much more value.

With U-Pack, you won’t pay extra for things like fuel, taxes, standard liability coverage, or the driver. Just pay based on the space you use. It’s a great way to move!

Here’s how it works in a nutshell…

An empty trailer or container is delivered to your home (you choose the type of equipment you want). You load your stuff inside, and call us to schedule pick up. We’ll deliver it to your new home (and it usually takes us about 2-5 days to get there), then you unload your things and get moved in.

No worries about renting a truck that’s too big and paying for space you didn’t use, or one that’s too small and having to leave things behind. Just load up a container, lock it and keep the key, or load into the amount of space you need in a trailer and put up a secure divider wall when you’re done. It’s easy.

Go U-Pack!

If you’re moving locally or just a short distance, it’s hard to beat the price of a rental truck. But when it comes to moving long distance, U-Pack is the answer.

A long-distance move can feel MUCH longer when you’re traveling in the compact cab of a rental truck. Add children or pets to the scenario and it’s anything but fun (as a matter of fact, you can’t safely travel with small children in a rental truck because there is no back seat).

U-Pack offers experienced drivers who take care of getting your belongings safely to your new home. You can relax, and make the drive in your personal vehicle. So much better.

Here’s Some Advice if You’re Planning to Rent a Truck

  • Read the fine print. We’re a generation that’s used to seeing terms of service on every website and online transaction. But do you read them? This is a time when you should. Get familiar with the details, from the number of days you have the rental, to the fuel policy (such as returning the truck full), and what happens if you get a flat tire. Always make sure you’re comfortable with the terms before you rent a truck.
  • Inspect the truck. Rental trucks are constantly on the road. Before you move it off the lot and head home to load it up, inspect it closely. Don’t just check the tires, either. Check the loading door and tie-down points to make sure your stuff will be safe inside. Look under the hood and check to make sure it all looks ok and that all fluid levels are good. Check the interior to make sure any air conditioning and windows work (you’ll want those on a long drive!). Make sure the brakes work well, and that the vehicle steers easily.
  • Know your expenses. There’s more than the cost of the rental to consider. Be sure to factor in the damage coverage, taxes, fuel costs, and travel costs as well. If you want to see how much money you should set back for fuel, check out the rental truck fuel calculator. Travel costs will be your hotel and food along your trip, along with tolls and any other on-the-road expenses. You’ll typically have to drive a loaded rental truck slower than interstate speed limits (specifically if you’re towing a trailer or vehicle)—so plan for extra days on the road.

We hope this helps you make some decisions about how to get from your old home to your new.
