PODS® Rates Compared to U-Pack

October 2nd, 2015 - 10:48 AM

Is your PODS® rate too high?

If you’ve seen a PODS® container around town, you may have thought they look like a convenient way to move – much better than driving a huge rental truck across the country (because who wants to do the driving!). They fit into a driveway or in front of a house, and they sit close to the ground, so moving things in and out is easy. But then you request a quote and see the price…and maybe you’re wondering if there are any cheaper container moving options out there.

U-Pack rates compared to PODS®

If you’re moving long distance and your PODS® rate is higher than your budget allows, check out U-Pack.

It’s a similar "you pack, we drive-type" service, where we deliver an empty container to your home, you load it, then we pick it up and drive it to your new place--but the price may be cheaper than PODS®. Find out how much your move would cost with a free moving quote.

Who’s Cheaper? PODS® or U-Pack?

While PODS® rates are normally very reasonable for local moving and storage, U-Pack regularly comes out on top for long-distance moving. Both companies offer free quotes, so compare away!

U-Pack containers are called ReloCubes. They are metal, weatherproof containers that are 6’ x 7’ x 8’, similar in size to the smallest PODS® container. You can use one Cube™, or as many as you need.

Your ReloCube rate is based on the number of Cubes you use – and regardless of how many you reserve, you only pay for what you use (or you can go with the trailer option and also pay for only the space you use).

PODS® rates are also based on the number of containers you use. For long-distance moves, they come in two sizes: the 7 ft. and 16 ft. The 7ft. container is comparable to the ReloCube, and the larger 16 ft. container would be similar to 2-3 Cubes.

It’s Not Just About PODS® Rates – Compare Service Too

As you compare rates, it’s also important to compare how the overall service meets your needs. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Service Area

When you get your PODS® rate, it should show you instantly whether they can provide door-to-door service on both ends of your move. While PODS® services many of the larger markets, you may find limited availability in smaller areas. If you live in an area they don’t service, don’t worry! U-Pack can service most markets with ReloCubes or moving trailers. U-Pack has over 240 service centers in all 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

  • Loading Time

While PODS® allows as much time as you need to load and unload, U-Pack offers up to three business days on each end. We’ve found that this is typically the perfect amount of time to get the job done (and many apartment complexes, city parking regulations, homeowners associations, etc., will not allow parking for longer periods of time). If you need a little extra time, you can have it delivered on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, and load/unload over the weekend, too! And, of course, storage is available if you need it. If you have loading/unloading needs that differ from our standard offering, call a moving specialist at 800-413-4799 to discuss your options.
  • Transit Time

Thanks to one of the most efficient transportation systems in the industry, U-Pack is able to move your belongings across country quickly and safely – transit times average just 2-5 business days (your U-Pack quote will display the estimated transit time). In most locations, you also have the option of adding U-Pack Guaranteed. With this service, you know the exact day your ReloCube or trailer will deliver to your destination. PODS® transit time depends on factors such as the availability of delivery vehicles and the distance to the delivery location.
  • Container Size

PODS® has three different container sizes. The 12 ft. container is used only for local moves, so if you’re moving long distance, you’re comparing the 7 ft. and the 16 ft. containers. When you compare PODS® container sizes to U-Pack, you’re looking at the ReloCube or the trailer.

The ReloCube, as we said above, is 6’ x 7’ x 8’ in size, and the trailer is 28’ x 8’ x 9’.  U-Pack offers flexibility because you only pay for the space you use, so you don’t have to stress as much when choosing a container size. You can use multiple Cubes, or as much space as you need in the trailer.

  • Payment Requirements

A perk U-Pack customers appreciate is that U-Pack doesn’t require up-front payment. Just reserve with a credit card (no holds or charges are placed on the card), and pay for your move once it’s in transit. There’s no down payment required to place your reservation.

If you move long distance with PODS®, payment is required 5 days before your delivery day.
