It's Flashback Friday— each week, U-Pack will revisit a blog topic that's been helpful and fun for our readers. Be sure to check the comments section of each post for even more valuable moving advice!

This week, we're revisiting one of the most useful U-Pack blog posts— the one about military weight tickets. If you're making a DITY move, you'll want to know all of the details and steps required for ensuring proper reimbursement. Have more questions that aren't answered here? Let us know!

In order to be reimbursed for your DITY Move (Do-It-Yourself), you'll need to have the following documents:

The U.S. military provides the DD Form 2778, Standard Form 1038 and DD Form 1351-2, and your moving company will need to provide Certified Empty and Loaded Weight Tickets. If you have specific questions about requirements for a military relocation, your best resource is your Personal Property Transportation Officer (PTO). They can go over the DITY move procedure and answer questions about the documents you'll need for your move.

If you are doing a military relocation move, U-Pack can provide Certified Weight Tickets upon request.

Before we drop the ABF trailer or ReloCube(s) to you, our driver will go to a certified scale to have it weighed empty. Then, after it's loaded, our driver will return to the certified scale to have it weighed full.  When the trailer or ReloCube is delivered to your destination, the driver will give you a copy of the full and empty certified weight tickets to submit for reimbursement.

If you plan to be reimbursed for your military move, make sure that the moving company you choose is willing to provide certified weight tickets and verify the charge for empty and full tickets.

This information has been very very helpful, however I have a complicated situation and I need guidance. My husband went from basic to AIT,to Fort Hood Texas and then to Iraq in less than a year. I remained in North Carolina with my family and did not move to Texas. My husband will be returning in June, now I will be moving to Texas, we want to do the Dity move. Would I contact the nearest base which is Fort Bragg, or do I need to contact Fort Hood Texas? Also I do not have a copy of my Husband’s orders but I have Power of Attorney would that help? Please help me ASAP!!!! Thank you!!!

Velez,
I recommend starting with the Fort Hood office for your military relocation. You can contact the MWR here, http://www.hoodmwr.com/acs/rrb_contact1.html. They should be able to provide more specific information about your move and point you in the right direction.

Make sure to have a complete set of orders included in your documentation to hand in for reimbursement of your PPM or Personally Procured Move (formally known as a ‘DITY’ or ‘Do It Yourself’ Move).

How do you know if a weigh ticket is certified. My full weight ticket looks kind of... "ghetto" but, they said it was certified.

McLeran, the way a weight ticket looks can defintely vary by station! Most weigh stations will display their certification on-site (often a CAT scale). Be cautious of tickets that do not list a station name and/or address, as well as gross and tare weights.

Hi Sophie: thanks for checking with us! I hope we can help with your move. You do certainly have a complicated situation! I would recommend calling the last base your husband was stationed at in the States prior to his deployment to Iraq (which sounds like Fort Hood?). The Transportation Officer there should be able to help or direct you to the right person to speak with. It's important to make sure you have the correct orders/paperwork before completing a DITY move to ensure you'll be properly reimbursed by the military. Please let us know if we can answer any further questions or help you plan your move!

Does anyone know where the nearest certified weigh station is to Killeen TX. My husband and I are moving from Fort Sill to Fort Hood and will be needing to weigh our truck upon arrival. Google seems to have no answers.. Thank you!!!

Erica, I did a quick search and the best option I could find was the CAT site for a listing of the nearest certified weigh stations. It looks like the nearest station shown is in Temple, TX. I hope this information helps!

I had a DITY move over Thanksgiving and was unable to obtain a weight ticket. The Military branch was closed when I picked up the truck and there was no weigh station on my four hour drive. What do I do? Please help, thank you.

Hi Allison: I would suggest checking with your Transportation Office to see what they will accept if you've already completed your move. Unfortunately, most DITY moves require full and empty certified weight tickets to qualify for a DITY move reimbursement. If it will help, I would be happy to provide you with information and weights for standard size shipments (even though you didn't move with U-Pack, your TMO may accept an industry-standard weight for the size truck you used). Again, be sure to check with your officer to see if they will accept an estimated weight info post-move for reimbursement. Please let me know if I can help with any questions!

Make sure you keep all paperwork because dfas will try and say you owe them way more then they gave you.
