I am a packing expert. Well, kind of. I may have mentioned before that in the first 17 years of life I moved only one time - and I was only a year old...so I don’t think that counts. But, in the 15 years that followed, there have been 16 moves. Granted, for the first few moves everything I owned got thrown in the back of a pick-up truck (which wasn’t much since I was a college student).
If you think about it, moving is as hard for kids as it is for adults. They’re leaving behind familiar places and important friends just like we do. And, they’re faced with a lot of “new” things, like finding new friends and starting a new school – that can be scary!
Here are some things to keep in mind while you’re packing your kids’ stuff. They’re going to need lots of love, lots of time, and lots of attention to their feelings.
You might also consider the following tips to make the transition easier for the entire family:
If possible, pack your children’s rooms last. They’ll have toys to play with while you’re packing the rest of the house. This might keep you from having to entertain them while you’re packing and it might he... Read More
There’s a big difference between moving across town and moving across the country. Besides the extra time and expense, you also have to pack differently.
The nice thing about local moves is that you can pack almost any way you want and not worry about it too much. You’re only looking at a few minutes of travel time, so drive slowly and you’re home free! When you are moving across the country, the rules change a little bit. Every item needs a secure place in your trailer or ReloCube.
I’m often asked, “What can I not move?” My normal response is, “What did you have in mind?” To accurately answer your question, I would have to provide you with a laundry list of items, half of which probably wouldn’t pertain to you or your move. It will usually save you some time if you tell me the items you have questions or concerns about.
This might help too…U-Pack has a “do not ship” list at upack.com. Check it out. You’re probably going to find similar items listed with any company you choose to move with.
Here’s an overview:
We cannot transport any items that are poisonous, perishable, corrosive or flammable. Cleaning supplies, fuels and bleach are good examples of things people often don’t think about. T... Read More
If you’ve visited upack.com and checked out the ReloCube, you’ve probably figured out that it’s a pretty cool way to move. But, if you’re not a moving pro, it might be a little difficult to figure out if all your stuff will fit inside – especially the BIG stuff.
This information should help…
The ReloCube’s inside dimensions are 70 in. x 82 in. x 93 in. (lwh). If you don’t have a lot of stuff to move, it might be a good idea to tape off these measurements in the corner of one of the rooms in your house and stack your stuff inside. This will give you a GREAT picture of how much room you have to load into.
Oh…the dreaded part of moving – actually deciding what you’re taking with you and packing it up! It’s so much easier when you have plenty of moving boxes and supplies! When you reserve your trailer or ReloCube, don’t forget that we offer packing materials as well.
You have the option of purchasing moving boxes for packing up several rooms or for just small moves – which ever works for your situation. You can buy furniture pads in bundles of three or six – people love these because they are perfect for protecting your wooden furniture. If yo... Read More
Hmmm…is there really a secret to packing clothing? Yes! And they can save you lots of space and money.
How to pack your clothing is probably one of the last things you’re concerned with during your pre-move planning. Most of us would just put them all in boxes or trash bags and be done with it. That’s what I did when I moved. However, if I ever move again I have new strategies that I am certain will save me time and money. Try the following tips:
Don’t empty your dresser. Put tape on all of the drawers to keep them secure during the move. It would probably take at least two or maybe three large boxes to move the contents of a 4-drawer dresser (if they are packed full like mine are). ... Read More
Do you really need all those things you've been collecting for years? Quite possibly one of the most difficult tasks about moving is deciding what to take and what to part with. Putting that beloved sweater that you haven’t worn in 5 years in the “give away” pile is heart-wrenching. But, trust me…I think you’ll find parting with some of your stored “treasures” can make moving a much more enjoyable experience – at least it makes it cheaper.
The moving two year rule If you haven’t worn or used it – or even seen it – in two years, get rid of it. That’s right…I said it. Now, I completely understand that there are some things that you just can’t part with. I’ve got the stuff I love (I won’t go into it all here) in plastic totes in the garage. But, when it’s clutter – things that you don’t just love, or can’t liv... Read More
