What is the cheapest way to move?

This is a great question. And when you Google it, you get many, many answers. The only way to be certain about the cheapest way to move is to begin getting moving quotes. Then, of course, it's important to research the moving companies you're considering to make sure both price and service are legitimate.

From what I've read, popular opinion is that the all around cheapest way to move is truck rental. It's understandable that people would automatically assume that it costs less since all of the work is left up to the customer.

But, in many cases, U-Pack would prove that theory wrong.

People set budgets every day for things like groceries, rent, entertainment, and shopping. I even have a budget set for how much I spend on going out to eat! When it comes to moving, why not set a budget for that, too? Whether your cross country move is expected or unexpected, I’ll help you create a budget for it so that you don’t overspend. Let’s take a look at some things you should do to create a reasonable moving budget.

State the facts
The cost of your cross country move will depend on the specifics of your move which include how much you’re moving, when you’re moving, and where you’re moving from and to. You’ll need this information in order to get moving quotes from cross country movers, so jot it down and keep it handy.

What is the cheapest way to move furniture to another state?
So, you’re moving to a different state and have lots of furniture to move. Of course, you want to move it all affordably, but how do you know the cheapest way to move your king-size bed and Grandma’s china cabinet? There are several things to consider when you’re searching for the cheapest option for moving your stuff.

Weight vs. Space
First, many moving companies charge based on the weight of your furniture. This can be a huge problem. Your bathroom scale can’t exactly weigh your dining room table. So how can you estimate your cost? Unless you’ve moved before, and are moving the same size home again, it’s very difficult. So, I suggest choosing a moving option that charges by space, not weight. You can easily measure t...

However, there are some affordable options available if you know where to look. In order to get the cheapest options for moving, you have to consider your move date, the amount of space you use, and your method of moving. Let’s take a closer look.

Getting the Cheapest Moving Option – Choosing the Right Move Date

If you’re searching for a way to get your finances under control and you took the plunge and got the iPhone 5, there are some budget apps you’ll definitely want to check into. My advice is to try out the “lite” version first (if a free option is available), then make the purchase after you’ve decided on the one(s) that fit your lifestyle best. John Maxwell says, “A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” Using a budget app on your iPhone could be a great place to start getting control.

How Much to Save Before a Move

A wise man once said “Never spend your money before you have it.” That advice is very valuable, especially when you’re planning for a move. It’s also wise to figure out how much to save before a move. But how do you know how much money you need to save? Let’s outline some costs.

The cost of the move. The cost of you move will vary on which type of service you use, where you are moving to and from, and how much you are moving. Of course, it costs more to move several states away than it does to move down the street. And similarly, it will cost more to move a four-bedroom home than a tiny apartment. So how can you figure your moving cost? You have to decide which moving option you will use.

I wish there was a simple answer to that question. Though it leans toward being as complicated the age-old “What is the meaning of life?” question. But here’s what I can tell you (with confidence): the best place to start is by getting moving quotes. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? Before you can figure out which service is most affordable, you’ll need to have prices to compare. Just make sure to start early; I recommend at least 30-60 days in advance. That gives you plenty of time to research, weigh the pros and cons of each mover and make sure you’re getting all of the services you need (while still staying within your budget).

When you start getting moving quotes, you’ll find there are several options available to choose from – some cheap, some not-so-cheap. Today I&rsq...

What is the cheapest way to move a small amount of furniture?

Well, just ask some friends that question and some will tell you NOT to even move it, but sell it and buy new stuff at your new home. Are you kidding me? I’ve grown quite fond of my furniture. I actually like the small stain on our couch. It reminds me of the Super Bowl party we had where a friend spilled her salsa on my cushion. And I would NEVER get rid of my antique dining room table. I’m too emotionally attached to it. If you’re like me, you’ll actually want to MOVE that furniture to your new home, even if it’s just a few pieces. But how do you do that affordably?

Rental trucks. If you only have a small amount of furniture to move, you most likely won’t be abl...

Anybody who has ever moved probably knows how expensive the moving process can be. However, there are lots of ways to move and save— unfortunately, they're often overlooked! If you're moving on a budget, try these tactics to conserve cash:

  • Move Less- One of the easiest ways to move and save is to pare down your belongings. Take advantage of your moving preparations by cleaning out items during packing; separating the everyday essentials from the ’wow, I don't even remember buying this' things. A good rule of thumb: if it hasn't been used/worn in a year, get rid of it!
  • Get creative with packing materials- If extra moving blankets aren't in your budget, use materials you already hav...

Surprisingly, rental trucks aren't always the easiest way to move when it comes to your sanity or your wallet!

Moving Expenses - It's Tax Time!

Can I deduct my moving expenses?
The answer is ’maybe'. I know— if only there were a tax calculation handbook that could give simple yes-or-no answers, there would be much less tension in the world! Luckily, we've gathered a few guidelines to help you calculate your moving expenses.

The first thing you'll need to do is determine whether or not you can actually deduct your moving expenses (no need to spend time on an extra form if your move isn't eligible for any deductions). So who is eligible to deduct their moving expenses? If you moved to a new home because of a new workplace, or if you are a retiree or survivor moving into the United States, you likely qualify to count your moving expenses towards your tax deduction. As always, there are a few requirements to verify that you fall into one of the above categories; namely the Distance Test and...

We often get questions about how U-Pack equipment compares to Budget truck rental equipment. When you're comparing prices and services, it's good to know how the sizes convert so you can make sure you're comparing apples with apples.

To help you get a good picture of what an ABF moving trailer looks like, they're 28 feet in length, 8 feet wide, and 9 feet tall. So they're longer, wider and taller than even the largest Budget rental truck.

The chart below converts Budget truck rental sizes to ABF trailer linear footage.

Timing is Everything
If you've been researching your move, you've probably found that the moving industry runs on a system of "peak" and "off-peak" days, similar to the airline industry. That just means that some days are more expensive than others. If you've got some flexibility, choose an off-peak moving day to save a little money.

Best time of year to move…
If you're not set on a summer move – consider choosing fall or winter. Since not as many people move this time of year, the moving industry is a litter slower, resulting in more competitive prices. Get a moving quote and compare.
