The rental truck and weigh station dilemma

If you’re moving your personal household goods long distance in a rental truck, you may be wondering if you have to stop at every weigh station along the way. The last thing you need is a ticket because you didn’t stop when you were supposed to. Truth is, there’s no universal answer for whether or not you should stop at a weigh station – each state has different rules.

The good news is that we’ve done the research so you can know what to expect ahead of time. The information you’ll find here was provided by each state’s commercial vehicle enforcement division, DOT, state police headquarters, motor carrier services, or transportation port of entry. Toward the end, you’ll find a way to bypass stopping at weigh stations while still saving money on your move.

Info About U-Pack Moving Trailers

You’ve got choices when it comes to moving, and one of the most cost-effective is in a moving trailer. Today let’s look at what you get with U-Pack moving trailers, including how big they are, how much room you need for parking, how to load one, and how to get a quote.

To put it very simply, a moving trailer is a large metal box on wheels. It differs from your standard rental truck in that it detaches from the tractor, so it can be left at your location to pack up. Here’s an example of the moving trailers used by U-Pack.

Need a Hand?

There may be situations where doing your own packing and loading isn't an option. The self-move service price may look great, but doing the physical part of the move just won't work. Do you throw in the towel and go with a full-service mover? Sure they do it all – the packing, loading and driving – but what about the price? The cost of a full-service mover can put a serious hurt on your pocket book. So what does a budget-conscious consumer do?

Trailer or ReloCube – What’s Best for My Move?

U-Pack offers two types of equipment for moving long distance: the moving trailer and the ReloCube.

Because you only pay for the space you use, either type of equipment works for any size move. But, some situations certainly call for one or the other. Let’s take a look at the details of both types to help decide the best fit for your move.

U-Pack Trailer Move

The external dimensions of the trailer are 28ft x 8ft x 9ft (lwh), and internal dimensions are 324in x 96in x 108in. It stands about 48in off the ground and is equipped with a ramp for both loading and unloading.

Things to get rid of before you move

Quite possibly one of the most difficult tasks in moving is deciding what to take with you and what to part with. Putting the beloved sweater you haven’t worn in five years in the “give-away” pile can be a little heart-wrenching. But, when it’s all said and done, most people find that parting with some stored “treasures” can make moving a much more enjoyable experience, not to mention that it can be a big money saver!

When you move with U-Pack, you pay only for the space you use—whether that’s linear footage in a moving trailer or a certain number of ReloCubes. So, moving less means paying less.

Prepare Before Moving Day

Though U-Pack is a do-it-yourself "you pack, we drive" service, you may need help loading the big stuff without spending a lot on full-service movers. There's a solution that can help you stay within your budget while still getting the help you need; you can use a DIY service then hire movers and packers to load on an hourly basis.

If that's the route you decide to go, you'll be directing the labor, so it's important to get your home and your belongings ready for moving day. Preparing ahead of time can help your movers and packers work more quickly and efficiently, and that can be a big money saver in the long run.

Start with the two "P's"— Purge and Prepare.

Prepping a washing machine for a move

Whether it’s a front-load or a top-load washing machine, it’s important to make sure it’s ready before the moving truck arrives.

We recommend starting the process a few weeks ahead of time. That way, if you need to order parts, or if you have problems finding the owner's manual, you'll still have plenty of time to prepare it properly.
